Imogen Hill

Taking inspiration from the likes of Richard Long, Patrick Heron and Mark Noble, artists who are conscious of the importance of nature, are respectful of it and encourage its changes which influence their artwork, I am conscious of the neglect of the climate and of our perspective being distracted by the gradual, sinister growth of technology from the beautiful, refreshing growth of nature – the most powerful, omniscient presence of all. In recent years, ever since the first COVID-19 lockdown and becoming a carer, I’ve found that mental peace is hard to come by and that one of the only ways that I can escape the noise of everyday life is by going on walks like a very late Romantic poet or character in Romantic literature.

By gathering natural resources on my walks I have made clay and pigments. Rain has fallen and smudged areas of ink from where I’ve worked outside, I encourage earthly elements print onto and interfere with my artwork. My practice is an exploration of texture, building on various surfaces while using techniques that suggest a unity of the soul and landscape.

I submerge myself in nature by working on the ground, suggesting closeness, which also enables me to put my all into a surface, to splatter watercolour, ink and work clay to merge figurative and abstract forms that I’ve come across on my walks to create diary entries that recollect my movement while walking and to immerse myself in nature to piece my identity back together.
