Pete Stevenson

Pete Stevenson

My passion is scavenging about, mudlarking by the Thames looking for objects that have been turned into ‘something rich and strange’ by the tides. Our society has an out-of-control culture of consumption and newness. Things with no value can have a spirit or energy in them that’s easy to overlook. I want my work to make people stop and think.

The river that runs through our great capital city tell us about time passing and of our links with people no longer here. Many of my objects are fragile and battered but they’ve survived. Old bits of shoe leather with the green copper nails still in place. Pieces of enamel that have cracked and formed strange patterns. Over lockdown I made 100 sculptures and have built on this practice since then.

My aim is to create an immersive environment that will elicit a small gasp of surprise from visitors as they enter.
